‘Tis Better to Give Than to Receive

Garry, Maria and Josh at CAST In a packed room at Cultivate’14, Garry Grueber, a partner at Cultivaris painted a picture of just how radically different horticulture will look in
30 years.  Garry spoke on a project Cultivaris began six years ago.

Garry and Josh helped address the future needs of global hunger by developing a protocol for invitro propagation of Breadfruit (Artocarpus altilis). This initiative has enabled the Global Breadfruit division of Cultivaris to ship trees to tropical farmers and aid organizations globally.

Josh Schneider in Nigeria, AfricaWorking with the Breadfruit Institute and organizations likeTrees That Feed Foundation, Cultivaris/GBF partner Josh Schneider has shipped trees to thousands of poor farmers in more than 30 countries.

Josh Schneider with one year breadfruit tree“Our Breadfruit begin producing after two years and continue for more than fifty years, producing enough to feed a family for six months each year,” said Schneider.

Breadfruit is a nutritious, starchy fruit that cooks and tastes like a potato and can easily be processed into a high quality, gluten-free flour.

“For the first time in history, we have a potentially permanent solution to hunger in tropical regions.”
– Dr. Diane Ragone, Breadfruit Institute Director.

2015 Pantone Color of the Year: Marsala

MARSALA PANTONE 18-1438 A naturally robust and earthy wine red, Marsala enriches our minds, bodies and souls

Have you heard Marsala is the new Pantone color for 2015? It makes for an elegant, grounded statement color when used on its own or as a strong accent to many other colors – especially in the landscape.

“This hearty, yet stylish tone is universally appealing and translates easily to fashion, beauty, industrial design, home furnishings and interiors.” – Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director, Pantone Color Institute®

Two plants UpShoot represents recognize Marsala in their spring or fall color palette:

Old Fashioned Smoke Bush PBR
Cotinus coggygria ‘Old Fashioned’ PP 19,035

Old Fashioned Smoke Bush PBR

Old Fashioned is a fast growing shrub with bluish-green leaves, reddish petioles and dark pink new growth. It really shines in autumn when foliage turns a brilliant orange-pink-red combination. Just ask theFine Foliage ladies who’ve included it as an Unsung Fall Hero pick.

Persian Spire™ Upright Ironwood
Parrotia persica ‘JL Columnar’ PP 24,951

Persian Spire™ Upright Ironwood

This upright Parrotia is fast growing and in spring, leaves emerge with a strong purple cast fading into a purple halo margin. Dark green summer foliage produces an elaborate autumn display of ever-changing yellow, orange, burgundy and red hues.

Red Kettle Campaign

Support the Red Kettle Campaign

Jim and I have been involved with our local Salvation Army in Painesville, Ohio for many years.

The Salvation Army Red Kettles and bell ringers are a fixture during the holidays across the country.

When you see them outside your favorite retail establishment, please consider donating to this or another local charity to help those less fortunate also have a joyous noel.

And, if you want to give but are short on cash, consider donating your time to ring the bell.

Families, civic organizations, church groups and clubs are welcome to adopt a kettle for a day.

The Nursery Growers of Lake County Ohio, Inc.
A special UpShoot Salute to The Nursery Growers of Lake County, Ohio for manning a local kettle!
